Showy Lady's Slipper Showy Lady's Slipper
(Cypripedium reginae)
In one of my favorite wildflower locations, the various lady's slippers bloom in stages.  The last species to flower are the showy lady's slippers.  Compared to the other varieties, the showy version are just what their name claims - showy!

Sadly, this plant is falling victim to wildflower thefts.  What most people who dig them don't realize is that the plants require very specific soil conditions to thrive.  Most stolen plants are dead within a short period of time after being relocated.
