What kind of equipment do
you use?
After more than 25 years and
nearly 80,000 satisfying images, we've made the switch to
digital equipment. Gone are the days of manual focusing
and manual film advance, as well as waiting for slides to be
returned from the lab. We are now shooting with a Nikon
D200 equipped with a Nikkor 18-200mm lens and a Nikkor 70-300mm lens
(105mm - 450mm 35mm
equivalent). The storage medium is two 8-gb San Disk
Extreme III and three 4-gb San Disk
Extreme III compact flash cards. The flash used is a
Nikon SB600. We still use filters only minimally - UV
for lens protection, circular polarizer for enhanced colors,
and a grad gray for those challenging lighting
situations. Our trusty Bogen tripod continues to support
the equipment.

How do you
get your backcountry images?
Images created in
remote areas were obtained by backpacking or paddling a kayak
into the destination. We backpack regularly, primarily in the
Upper Midwest, but occasionally elsewhere. Our camera
equipment is always with us! Other images were created during
canoeing, cycling, or family camping adventures.
How do you
make your wildlife images?
Each of the
wildlife images you viewed were just that--wildlife. No
"captive" or "trained" animals were used
unless indicated - (International Crane Foundation). The
timber rattlesnake photos were created in one general area.
Most of the other images were captured within 10 miles of our
home. To make satisfying wildlife images requires a thorough
understanding of your equipment and endless patience. Many
years worth of time have been invested in our nearly 80,000+
collection of images.
